What is A True Bug?
What are True Bugs? True bugs are distinguished by their sucking mouth parts and two pairs of wings. Examples of true bugs are: stink bugs, western conifer seed bugs and boxelder bugs.
Common True Bugs
Boxelder Bug
Appearance: Gray-brown to black with red lines on the under surface and lower portion of the outer wings.
Behavior: Primarily feeds on boxelder trees and may occasionally enter households in early summer.
Stink Bug
Appearance: Greenish, brownish black, occasionally yellowish or gray, about 1/4 inch long.
Behavior: Causes damage to seed crops and can enter homes, becoming nuisances.
Western Conifer Seed Bug
Appearance: about 3/4 inch long, with red or dark brown bodies and white or yellow stripes on their abdomen. They have flattened back legs that make them look like leaves, and a black and yellow pattern on their wings
Behavior: They feed on the sap of trees like pines, spruces, and Douglas-firs. They emit a foul odor when disturbed, and their wings make a buzzing sound like a wasp or hornet. They overwinter in protected areas, and often find their way into homes in the fall to stay warm
