Spring is Coming And So Are Those Bugs: Pest Prevention Tips

As the snow melts away, and the temperatures rise, lots of insects will be alive and active. Warmer temperatures signal to the bugs such as ants, wasps, and spiders that its time to come out. With the blossoming of flowers and trees, many insects will be collecting food, finding mates, and building their homes.

What will attract bugs to your home or business?

Good question! There are many factors that could attract unwanted pests such as ants, stinging insects, box elder bugs, beetles, tics, and spiders. Let's dive into the most common ones.

Food and water: Insects will actively search for food and water sources. For instance, ants will be highly active in their colonizing efforts, gathering food and water for their queen and her offspring. Ticks and fleas will look for new hosts during the spring, often hiding in cracks and corners of buildings near areas where dogs are kept. Spiders will be busy laying their eggs.

Pest Prevention Tips:

  • Don't over water your lawn and get rid of any standing water sources. Turn over any bowls, old tires, anything that is holding water. For bird baths and pet water, please change these regularly. Standing water sources can become breeding sites for mosquitoes and other bugs or an easy access to water.

  • Have proper food storage and don't leave out any food for bugs or mice to munch on. Store food and pet food in thick plastic or metal containers to keep insects and mice from munching on food.

  • Ask your vet about safe products to get rid of fleas and ticks on your pets.

  • Spring cleaning is a wonderful way to reduce pest populations. Spiders love dark, wet, and cluttered environments where they will be undisturbed and can set up their homes.

Trees, shrubs, and bushes that grow close to and touch your home can serve as pathways for insects. These plants act as bridges or highways that pests like ants, aphids, earwigs, and box elder bugs use to enter your house. Additionally, mice, being excellent climbers, can use branches and trees to gain access to your home..

Pest Prevention Tips:

  • Keep bushes, branches, and tree limbs cut down to prevent them from touching your home.

  • Keep shrubs and bushes pruned up as much as possible throughout the year.

Flowering plants are beneficial for the environment, particularly for pollinators. Stinging insects like wasps and yellow jackets are attracted to areas with many blooming flowers. Additionally, these insects enjoy feeding on aphids and other small bugs found on flowers.

Pest Prevention Tip: We recommend avoiding the placement of potted plants or planting new flowers close to your home, such as near the front door or near the foundation, to help prevent nests from being constructed around the eaves and soffits or in cracks in siding.

Why is this important? The aim is to stop pest populations from surging during the summer. Reach out to us to arrange a free inspection and ensure your home remains pest-free.
